THE STORY BEHIND THIS TEE
The garden is a bowl. The bowl is full of go stones. He is raking them.
A samurai stands in a large ceramic bowl filled with black and white go stones, drawing concentric patterns with a miniature rake. In his other hand, a tablet. Chopsticks rest across the rim. He is tending the garden. The garden fits in a bowl. The bowl fits on a table. None of this has changed the practice.
The karesansui — the Japanese dry rock garden — is not decoration. It is the act of sustained attention made visible. Each line drawn is not an outcome. It is the practice itself. The bowl does not make it smaller. A garden is wherever you tend it.
The seal reads 心具足. The mind is complete. Nothing missing. Nothing added. The chopsticks on the rim are the quietest detail: the practice of attention and the daily meal are equally ordinary, equally essential.
