THE STORY BEHIND THIS TEE
The reels have aligned. Three butterflies. The machine has paid out. She has not turned to look.
An onna-bugeisha sits at a slot machine, pressing the button. The reels show the natural world, with clouds, the full moon, Mount Fuji, the Great Wave, a crane in flight. The middle row shows three butterflies in perfect alignment. The jackpot. One butterfly rests in the dispensing tray. A second is on the naginata tip. A third hovers behind her.
She is still pressing the button.
The seal reads 無所得. Nothing to obtain. The reels show what she already has. The jackpot was already paid before she pulled the lever. She is winning what was never separate from her. The machine has confirmed it. She does not need the confirmation.
