Huineng was the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, a seventh-century monk whose teachings, recorded in the Platform Sutra, shaped the direction Zen would take for the next thirteen hundred years. One of his most radical claims was this: from the beginning, not a single thing exists. It isn't a statement of nihilism. It's a teaching on emptiness, the idea that nothing has fixed, independent, permanent existence, including the self doing the looking.
