Show Me Your Mind

This exchange is attributed to Bodhidharma, the semi-legendary monk credited with bringing Chan Buddhism from India to China around the fifth or sixth century. A student, later known as Huike, came to him in distress and asked for help pacifying his mind. Bodhidharma's response was direct. Show me your mind, and I will pacify it. The student searched and searched and found nothing he could point to. That search, and what it revealed, became one of the foundational stories in Zen teaching on the nature of mind itself.

Beneath it sits a much more recent failure to locate something. Volume could not be mounted. A standard error message, technical and indifferent, that nonetheless asks the same impossible question in different language. Show me the thing, so it can be addressed. It can't be shown. It was never going to mount.
