THE STORY BEHIND THIS TEE
The dog is pointing at the moon. The samurai is not.
A samurai in a kasa hat sits back to the viewer beneath a full moon. Beside him, a robot dog points at the moon with complete earnestness — paw raised, head tilted upward, the gesture executed perfectly. The samurai has not made the gesture. He simply sits. The moon is there regardless.
"The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon." — Zen teaching.
The robot dog has learned the gesture. It has not necessarily learned the difference. The samurai has learned the difference. He has stopped making the gesture. Whether his stillness is the answer or simply the absence of the wrong answer is the question the piece leaves open.
The seal reads 莫認指月. Do not mistake the finger for the moon. You are looking at something right now. Check what it is.
