THE STORY BEHIND THIS TEE
The machines are running. The koi are where they belong.
A samurai in a yukata stands at a bank of front-loading washing machines. Each drum contains a koi — red-and-white, gold-and-black, white, red — moving slowly through their cycle. He is retrieving a garment printed with the Hokusai great wave from the open machine. His katana rests on top. He has done this before. The sword is not needed for laundry. He brought it anyway.
The washing machine drums are portholes into water. The koi are not trapped. They are simply where they are — the same koi, the same patience, the same untroubled presence, regardless of the vessel.
The seal reads 静浄. Still and pure. The laundry and the mind. Same practice.
